Discover the language of computers! Learn how to code through game design. Grades 5-8/ages 10-14. 

Tech Takeover Winter Camp

December 27 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Techies wanted! We’re exploring the basics of coding and technology. Use your coding skills to command a robot, and play our favorite games. By the end of the day, campers will experience basic blockly coding and understand computer language a little better! Grades 2-4/ages 7-10. 

Create: 3D Winter Camp

December 30 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Design, prototype and print your own 3D creations. We’ll experiment with different mediums, develop 3D designs, explore designing software and use a 3D printer. At the end of the day, you’ll have your own art to take home! Grades 5-8/ages 10-14.

Makers Gonna Make Winter Camp

What do you want to make? The sky’s the limit! This week, we’re using 3D printers, laser cutters and more as we build big and small. Grades 9-12/ages 14-18.

STEAM Saturdays – Computer Science: Making a Cardboard Guitar Play

Saturday, January 4, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Saturday mornings are for investigation! Elementary aged children and parents/guardians/ care-givers are invited to participate in a STEAM project that they will work on individually or with others. Participants will be encouraged to share their findings or work with the group. We will also celebrate the scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and artists who inspired today's project.

2019-2020 Water Game Jam

The 2019-2020 Water Game Jam will focus on aquatic ecosystems in Iowa and encourage students to incorporate field investigation data and observations, online data resources and investigations in a new game idea. Game ideas are submitted via a 4-minute video to be considered for recognition. A panel of game and science experts will use a scoring rubric to determine top analog and digital games in two age categories (Grades 3-5 and 6-8).

Girls Love Code

An after-school club for girls in 3rd-5th grade who are interested in learning to code. The club is for beginners to explore coding in a fun and friendly environment. Registration is required.

Hour of Code

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Check out this website to find an event near you and for tips and resources on how to host an Hour of Code event in your neighborhood or school.

Planning and implementation are well under way for 12 awarded Computer Science is Elementary schools, a joint project of the Iowa Department of Education and the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council. For Kingsley-Pierson Elementary, students are already building confidence in computer science after only a couple months of implementing computer science into the elementary curriculum.
